The Story Behind Bang! Bang!

Bang! Bang! is one of my favourite works, where all the elements seemed to fall perfectly into place. Inspired by Jean Arthur as Calamity Jane, I was captivated by her stance and serious expression — poised, confident, and dramatic.

The imagery came from my late brother-in-law’s collection of books, woven into a painted background of pastel stencilled forms. Hidden among the layers are playful details: the suggestion of a band playing, an aeroplane drifting through the sky. The words, borrowed from a Calamity Jane song (perhaps Doris Day’s version), struck me as delightfully quirky and had to be included. Rising above the townscape, she embodies both strength and theatrical flair, commanding her stage with quiet power.
