The Story Behind Colman's Starch

One of the first pieces in my Imagined Landscapes series, Coleman’s Starch began as an experiment in creating a scene that could be viewed in two directions—an image that shifts depending on how you approach it. The mirrored arrangement of the buildings below creates a graphic symmetry, while still feeling like part of a lived-in world. The original paper carried screen-printed imagery, which I painted over, leaving the printed borders visible to hint at layers of history and meaning beneath the surface. Small drawn details weave through the composition, completing the piece and inviting the viewer to linger in both its structure and its strangeness.
