The Story behind Five Fairies Feeding

The spark for this piece came from an image of a tree divided into distinct rooms, each a small world contained within the larger whole. From there, I began assembling these miniature spaces with fragments cut from old maps and books, allowing the textures, colours, and histories of the paper to shape the story. The process was intentionally spontaneous—letting ideas emerge without forcing them—yet always with the aim of forming a landscape that felt alive with possibility.

In the midst of my source materials, I stumbled upon pages filled with tongue twisters, and they instantly felt like the native language of this strange new world. As a teacher, I’m drawn to the interplay between words and play, between knowledge and nonsense, so their inclusion came naturally. Layer by layer, the work blends a sense of curiosity, humour, and gentle absurdity, inviting the viewer to explore each ‘room’ as if they were stepping into a dream you can almost—but not quite—explain.
