The Story Behind Knobbly Knees

Like Coleman’s Starch, Knobbly Knees plays with the idea of a mirrored landscape. The starting point was a collection of vintage English magazines, which I cut apart to construct a scene that sits between the familiar and the absurd. The quote, discovered in one of these magazines, spoke to my own self-consciousness about showing my knees—a small but telling vulnerability. The composition includes the negative shapes of buildings to subtly disrupt the viewer’s sense of reality, alongside figures and objects from unexpected sources, such as a Joy Division postcard and a flying duck flipped upside-down. These elements anchor the image while simultaneously heightening its playful absurdity.
