The Story Behind Shirly Temple and Rupert

Shirley Temple and Rupert was one of my earliest mirrored landscapes. The idea began when I first encountered an image of a landscape doubled below itself — a surreal, dreamlike symmetry that felt both strange and captivating. I was immediately intrigued, and it became the spark for my own explorations.

Around the same time, I had been given a stack of vintage English magazines by my mother-in-law. As I sifted through their pages, I cut out buildings, figures, and curious objects. Alongside them, I discovered quirky phrases and odd snippets of text — fragments of language that surprised, delighted, or made me pause. These became essential elements of the collage, layering imagery with playful meaning.
